You don't get a chance to review an album by a renowned artist such as Ra - Re Valverde everyday. Making fame as a back up singer and songwriter for Jill Scott, Trina Broussard and Rashaan Patterson, she now launches her debut album titled A beautiful Mess.
As an overall picture, A beautiful Mess is not an album that can be categorized in one musical genre. Instead, the album is a collection of different styles and journeys from soul to eclectic ambient atmospheres and experimental R&B.
As a performer, next to big names of the industry, it is clear that mrs. Valverde combined all her experiences into an album that's become quite inventive and renewing and into which she scans the boundaries of her vocal and musical capabilities.
A beautiful Mess contains 14 tracks and while some of the songs, such as Love Will, Till U come Home and B with U, will need more than one listen (Ra - Re experiments with a kind of chaos - like spheres, but undoubtly manages to model them into great cuts that gain appreciation when listening over and over), other tracks are produced in a more 'mainstream" way.
The album contains some splendid radio friendly material with jams as Outside the Box (which probably is the most inside the box, if you know what I mean) and Superhero. As a vocalist, Ra - Re's capabilities are heart - warming. And as her voice often is masked with different studio effects, there is left enough room on the album in which her angel - like smooth alto is kept pure and untouched.
A beautiful Mess surely is an album that can teach people on how to listen, discover and appreciate great music.
The more 'safe' CD purchasers will need some time to discover the true beauty, while the more experimental music lover will realize from the first note that A beautiful Mess is another pearl in their collection. A recommended album.
